Whether you scanned this sign over Ballona Creek, on a Santa Monica beach overpass, or along a neighborhood trail, you’ve taken part in a piece of satirical guerrilla art.

I appreciate you being a good sport. I’ll remove all signage within a week and clean up a bundle of unrelated trash for good measure.

What’s the dealio?

I put those signs up to stoke a sense of ownership over our community’s public infrastructure and call attention to how few public commons we have on the Westside. We’re all so used to things being commercialized and sold… including the scant places available for us to interact with one another as a community. I wanted to leave a few small, tactile glitches in the landscape to remind you that we need to fight for our shared spaces and advocate for more of them.

Every footbridge across the Westside—from the 1906 timber spans of Ballona Lagoon to the beach overpasses of Santa Monica—exists because neighbors organized, fought off overdevelopment, and refused to let community space be paved over. They stand as monuments to local resilience and collective action.

This is just a daily reminder that community finds its depth and dimension not in home prices, but in shared spaces where we gather in ease and friendship. It’s getting harder and harder to find those spaces in Los Angeles. Cherish those we have, advocate for more, and wave at neighbors on the bridge.
